MACU and Flu Season

MACU continues in its effort to deter and manage the seasonal flu and the H1N1 virus on our campus during this winter semester. The H1N1 virus has slowed considerably, but experts are expecting the seasonal flu to become a factor within the next few weeks.

MACU is using guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and the Department for Homeland Security regarding the flu. For details of these guidelines, go to ttp://www.cdc.gov/h1n1flu/

We are emphasizing preventive steps to reduce the chance of contracting or spreading flue viruses. We encourage you to:

  • Wash your hands frequently.
  • Use hand sanitizer often.
  • Eat a well-balanced diet and get plenty of sleep.
  • Go to the doctor immediately if you notice any flu-like symptoms.
  • Stop attending class and suspend other social activities if you notice any flu-like symptoms.
  • Inform your resident assistant or resident director immediately if you notice any flu-like symptoms so we can help you reduce exposure to others. If you are a commuter, please inform your instructor via e-mail so arrangements can be made quickly to help you continue your studies from home and reduce exposure to your classmates.

Mid-America is prepared to comfortably isolate any campus-based student who is sick with flu-like symptoms or diagnosed with a type of flu. If you have family nearby, you will be encouraged to go home until at least 24 hours after your fever has broken without the aid of medication. If you live far from home, you will be moved temporarily to a dorm room away from other students.

Mid-America has state-of-the-art capabilities for conducting on-line classes. If you are ill, you will be able to work with your instructors to receive and return assignments by computer, ask questions by phone or e-mail, and continue with your studies.

We all hope the flu does not disrupt campus life this school year. Each of us can do our part by taking simple steps to avoid spreading germs and to get to the doctor immediately if we are ill.

Please check this page or your student my.macu.edu e-mail regularly for updates as the situation evolves during the semester.
