Program Director: Engineering
Dr. Joseph Johnston is a faculty member at Mid-America Christian University, where he also serves as director of Engineering. He brings over 20 years of professional experience in engineering design, testing, and leadership into the classroom.
Dr. Johnston earned his bachelor’s degree in engineering from Arkansas State University in 2004. He then went on to attain both a Master’s and Doctoral degree in Microelectronics-Photonics from the University of Arkansas. In 2011 Dr. Johnston became an electronics engineer for Tinker Air Force Base in Oklahoma City. There he developed avionics test hardware and software for sustainment of advanced electronics weapons systems for the B-2 stealth bomber. Beginning in 2022, he was tapped to create and lead a team responsible for the independent verification of nuclear critical software for an emerging Air Force platform and championed the adoption of modern digital engineering tools and DevOps methodologies, which ensures the aircraft is safe,
secure, and an effective component of U.S. nuclear modernization strategy.
In his spare time, Joe enjoys playing the guitar and astrophotography. He also is a Dungeons & Dragons Dungeon Master and would love to talk your ear off about any of these and many other topics.
Dr. Johnston loves the Lord and his family and is excited to guide students into a fulfilling career in engineering. His desire is to fulfill the MACU mission to prepare the next generation of engineers “to create, collaborate, and innovate to solve local and global problems for the glory of God through Jesus Christ and the good of society.”
