A Transformative Experience in Washington, D.C.

In February, President Phil Greenwald, the Student Government Association Cabinet, and four invited students traveled to Washington, D.C. Over the course of three days, the group engaged in meaningful conversations about leadership, faith, public service, and the role of Christian higher education in today’s cultural landscape.

The retreat was intentionally designed to expose student leaders to both national institutions and influential Christian organizations, while also providing space for reflection and spiritual growth.

Engaging National Christian Leadership

One of the most significant moments of the trip was the visit to the Council for Christian Colleges & Universities (CCCU) offices. Students met with CCCU leadership to discuss the current state of Christian higher education, religious liberty, and the challenges and opportunities facing faith-based institutions nationwide.

The conversation offered valuable insight into how universities like MACU fit into a broader national network committed to academic excellence and biblical conviction.

Exploring the Foundations of Faith

The group also toured the Museum of the Bible, where they explored the historical impact, preservation, and global influence of Scripture. The experience reinforced the centrality of biblical truth in shaping cultures, institutions, and personal lives.

For many students, this visit served as both an educational and spiritual highlight of the trip, connecting their academic pursuits with a deeper appreciation for the enduring authority and relevance of God’s Word.

Reflecting on Leadership and Legacy

An afternoon monument tour provided a powerful visual reminder of leadership and legacy. Standing at the Lincoln Memorial and viewing the Washington Monument prompted reflection on courage, sacrifice, and the lasting impact of principled leadership. The group also visited Capitol Hill, where they toured the historic halls of government. Observing the setting where national decisions are debated and enacted encouraged thoughtful discussion about civic engagement, integrity in public life, and the importance of faith-informed leadership.

Intentional Leadership Development

Beyond site visits, the trip included structured leadership discussions, nightly devotionals, and guided debrief sessions. These moments created space to process what students were learning and to consider how those lessons apply within the context of leadership.

By engaging both faith-centered institutions and the heart of the nation’s Capitol, student leaders returned with expanded perspective, renewed purpose, and a deeper understanding of what it means to lead with conviction.
