To demonstrate their leadership skills, nurses may consider obtaining the certified nurse manager and leader (CNML) credential through the American Organization for Nursing Leadership (AONL). Candidates must pass a 115-question multiple-choice exam covering strategic management and technology, finance, human resources, and performance. Eligibility requirements for the certification include a current RN license, a bachelor’s degree in nursing, and a minimum of either 2,080 hours of nurse manager experience or 4,160 hours of nurse leadership support experience.

The median salary for medical and health services managers, including nurse managers, was $117,960 as of May 2024, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). 

Nurse managers’ salaries can vary depending on their location, employer, industry, experience, and education. For example, individuals researching nurse salaries in Oklahoma will find that nursing pay can vary based on whether a nurse is employed in a rural or an urban setting. Nurse managers’ salaries also may be higher in larger healthcare systems or specialized units, where they oversee more complex operations and larger teams. 

Nationally, the bottom 10% of earners among all medical and health services managers made less than $69,680, while the top 10% of earners made more than $219,080 as of May 2024, according to the BLS. This range is higher than that for registered nurses, whose earnings ranged from $66,030 for the lowest 10% to $135,320 for the highest.

The job outlook for nurse managers is strong. Employment of medical and health services managers, including nurse managers, is projected to grow by 23% from 2024 to 2034, according to BLS data, which is significantly faster than the average growth projected for all occupations. An aging population, ongoing nursing shortages and retirements, and advancements in healthcare technology all are expected to contribute to the growing demand for skilled nursing managers.
