MACU Women’s Basketball Upsets NCAA Division I North Texas in Exhibition Play

The Mid-America Christian University women’s basketball team pulled off one of the biggest upsets in program history as a late rally propelled the Evangels to a 61-59 victory over the University of North Texas today.

The victory marked MACU’s first-ever win over a DI school in any sport.

After trailing the Mean Green by as much as 17 in the third quarter, the Evangels fought their way back in the final minutes of the game.

MACU went ahead for the first time in the game with under three minutes to go. With 3.7 seconds left on the clock, senior forward Alexis Shannon made a huge defensive stop that prevented the potential game-tying shot before time expired and secured the team a place in school history.

“I couldn’t be more proud of them,” said head coach Hannah Moeller. “They came in with a lot of grit. They weren’t just going to roll over.”

Moeller said she credits the team’s maturing roster for making big plays when they mattered the most.

“Everybody knows, accepts and owns their role,” she said. “They hit big shots at big moments. I couldn’t be any happier.”

MACU will look to carry the momentum into Austin, Texas on Saturday for a 1 p.m. tip as the Evangels look to stay unbeaten at Huston-Tillotson.
